INTRODUCING FALL, CHAPTER ONE

Three pieces to slowly ease us into the colder season.

As much as I’m not ready to let go of summer quite yet, working in fashion means starting to talk about fall a little earlier than I’m usually comfortable with :) but this first chapter feels like a very gentle way in.

First, the Juliette dress.

Juliette is a style we’ve carried before: romantic, flowy and incredibly easy to wear. This time, I wanted to reimagine her as a fall staple. The kind of dress you wear with tall boots and, eventually, a cream sweater draped over your shoulders.

To give it a slightly crisper, dressier feel, we made it in the tencel viscose fabric we first introduced in the Doll Dress Allongée last fall.

and yes, I’ll address the elephant in the room: it isn’t a 100% natural fibre.

Natural fibres will always be at the heart of what we do, but I’ve also realized there is a place in my own closet for a fabric like this. It holds its shape a little more, feels polished without being fussy, and gives certain pieces a look that I haven’t quite been able to achieve with our usual linens and cottons. I know a lot of you felt the same way about this fabric last fall, so it felt worth bringing back for the right piece.

Juliette is also one of those forgiving, easy-to-size styles that you can throw on without thinking too hard about it. and I think the photos speak for themselves. She is so, so beautiful.

Next are our Casita Cardigans, returning in two very different stripes.

The Charcoal Stripe is made from a deadstock fabric I sourced in Los Angeles a couple of years ago. We still had a decent roll tucked away, and on a bit of a whim I decided to use it for the cardigan. It turned out even better than I imagined.

It’s slouchy, nubby and incredibly cozy, with a softer, more relaxed feel.

Then there’s the Heritage Stripe, which is completely different. This is a brand new recycled cotton fabric for us, heavier in weight and substantial enough to really feel like a fall cardigan. The stripe has this subtle 70s feeling to it that feels fun and a little unexpected for harly jae. I’m completely in love with it.

and finally, the Doll Blouse.

This one was actually a last-minute addition after I stumbled across this wool and cotton blend plaid and immediately knew I had to do something with it.

I don’t say this lightly: I think it might be my favourite fabric we have ever carried at harly jae.

There is just something about the colours in this plaid that feels absolutely perfect. The fabric itself is light and airy, despite having wool in the blend, and it works so beautifully with the softness and volume of the Doll blouse. Truly, chef’s kiss.

Overall, i’m feeling very excited about where this fall collection is going.

It feels like a return to something that has always been at the core of harly jae: pieces that can move between your real life. Something you can wear to work, then again on the weekend. Pieces with a little whimsy, but that still feel grounded, useful and easy to live in.

That balance is going to come through more and more as the rest of fall unfolds.
