MILOS: A DRESS WITH A STORY

The Milos dress holds a deeply cherished place in my heart, representing countless special moments over the years. If you love a good story as much as I do, I invite you to read on and discover the journey that brought her to life...

    ---

In 2018, my cousin Nic visited me from Québec, hoping for a change of scenery. Sharing a mutual love for thrifting, I took him to my favourite local spots for some mindful retail therapy.

During our outing, we discovered an extraordinary shop filled with bold, costume-like pieces. Amidst the vibrant racks, I spotted what would eventually inspire the Milos dress. At first glance, it was cute but far from perfect - the bold red and yellow Hawaiian print was memorable but not what I was envisioning for my design!

While Nic didn’t quite see what I saw, I couldn’t resist the dress’s potential. Its silhouette spoke to me in the simplest, yet most beautiful way. I was re-imagining it in an exquisite European linen. So, I brought it home without a second thought.

Months later, my pattern maker and I set out to bring my vision to life. Though the original dress served as a strong reference, the transition to linen required thoughtful adjustments, particularly to the elastic details at the bust, back, and neckline. After a few samples and plenty of tweaking, the dress finally became everything I had envisioned.

I named her Milos as a nod to the Spring of 2020, when I was supposed to get married in Milos, Greece. Of course, 2020 had other plans, and I ended up marrying locally instead. Still, the name stayed, carrying with it all the joy and hope I associated with that time.

Since its launch, the Milos Dress has become a constant in my wardrobe, woven into countless significant moments of my life - and, as I've seen, the lives of so many of you. I hope it inspires you to create beautiful memories of your own :)

Although I wasn’t in Greece as planned, I still found a way to make the Milos Dress part of my wedding day. In July 2020, I wore a Satin version of the dress as my “getting ready” piece, adding a touch of elegance to a moment I’ll always cherish.

In January 2021, the Milos Dress became part of another special chapter in my life, as I wore it for my maternity photoshoot

Here I am at the previous home of harly jae, our Vancouver studio, just a few days postpartum.

The Milos Dress was one of the only pieces I loved wearing in those early days of motherhood - it made me feel comfortable, confident, and a little like my old self again.

The Milos Dress was perfect for breastfeeding, though it didn’t stop the occasional leaks! Remarkably, it survived that stage and remains unstained to this day.

What I love most is how forgiving the fit is; even though my body had changed so much, I was still able to wear my original size comfortably.

This piece truly carried me through those tender, "tired but happy" days with my daughter, offering both comfort and a sense of ease during such a raw and beautiful time.

It continued to be a favourite all the way through her first birthday - wild to think how time had passed, yet I was still wearing the dress

& now, as we prepare to launch this year's pre-order, I am wearing the dress once again, now while growing my second child
